Over the two days post-Easter break, April 4-5 2018, we will be performing critical security updates to research cloud compute infrastructure in the melbourne-qh2-uom availability zone.

BIOS and kernel upgrades will be performed on the compute hypervisors to mitigate against Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities, as announced earlier here: https://support.ehelp.edu.au/discussions/topics/6000052478

Impact

These upgrades will be disruptive to research cloud compute instances and involve downtime of about 15-20 minutes per instance as the underlying compute infrastructure is upgraded. The upgrades will be performed in a rolling fashion, at the time of each upgrade the impacted instances will be stopped and restarted by our DevOps team.

Only compute instances/VMs will be impacted by these upgrades. Volume and object storage services have operational redundancy that allows these upgrades to be performed without interruption.

When

Starting from 10am, Wednesday April 4th, 2018, ending at 6pm, Thursday April 5th, 2018. Progress updates will be posted here.

Notifications and Support

From Friday, March 23, 2018, we will be emailing users of all instances in melbourne-qh2-uom availability zone via a support ticket in Freshdesk on their behalves. If users require to confine outage time of their instances to specific window, or if the instances are truly critical to your services, please contact us via the Freshdesk support ticket we will generate for you by COB March 29, 2018.
