Summary of Australian Research Data Storage Products

The Nodes provide a range of data storage products for researchers in Australia. Different storage products can be appropriate for different phases in the lifecycle of your dataset.
This table provides a summary of the different data storage products, and links to the Node websites for further information.

NodeStorage nameCategoryFeaturesLinks
QCIFQRISdata - Frequent Access
Working
For datasets that are either changing or require frequent access. It is replicated daily with on and off site copies. Offered through NFS mounts, SSH-based protocols and Nextcloud (browser or file syncing).
information
QCIF
QRISdata - Infrequent Access
Working
Datasets that are accessed less frequently are less volatile and are not being used for compute intensive work. It is replicated daily with on and off site copies. Offered through NFS mounts (with DMF), SSH-based protocols and Nextcloud (browser or file syncing).information
QCIF
MeDiCi
Working
Provides an enhanced disk caching layer with tape storage to present the same data collection simultaneously to multiple services via local caches. Data is seamlessly replicated between local caches and the home cache. Offered through NFS mounts, SSH-based protocols, Nextcloud  (browser or file syncing), Swift, S3, and CIFS.
information

QCIFQRISdata - Archive StorageArchivalArchival storage for datasets. Data may be held off-line. It is replicated regularly with on and off site copies.information

QCIF
QRIScompute - Volume Storage
Computational
High-speed disk storage that can be written and read like a physical computer’s hard drive. Volume storage is independent of VMs and can be attached to a single VM at a time for computation.
information
QCIF
QRIScompute - Object Storage
Computational
Storage that contains "objects" that an application can "get" and "put" using the HTTP protocol.  Suited to data that is written once and read often.
information

QCIF
QRIScompute - Manila Storage
Computational
Presents a File System-as-a-Service which can be simultaneously connected to multiple VMs within a tenant.
information
Intersect
WorkSpace
Working
Large amounts of active storage with maximum performance for use with your own applications. information
IntersectDeepSpaceArchivalA kind of Space suitable for archive retention, either as a secondary mirror or a primary backup. Trades performance for capacity but in all other respects emulates active storage for protocol and application access. information
Intersect
Idea
Hosted
Intersect.data.edu.au - Ready-made web environment for people to collaborate on research data and metadata. Enables distributed groups to share, manipulate, curate and manager any type of data. Suitable for non-IT people, requiring minimal administration.
information
TPAC
THREDDS Data Server (TDS)
Hosted
A server for public datasetsinformation
