In 2025*, we are implementing a new feature within the ARDC Nectar Research Cloud dashboard for users to connect their ORCID.
This article covers the following topics:
- What is an ORCID?
- Why is this happening and what are the benefits?
- What do I need to do?
- Troubleshooting
- What is the planned timeline of changes?
What is an ORCID?
An Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a standard, global identifier for a researcher or research contributor. Further information about ORCID can be found on the ORCID website.
Why is this happening and what are the benefits?
This is part of a series of changes to the Nectar Dashboard and allocation system to make it easier for users to enter details such as research grants and publication information when completing an allocation request or renewal. In turn, this helps us to better measure and report on the impact of Nectar in supporting research and enables us to amend researchers’ names or institutions more easily inside the Nectar allocation system where required.
What do I need to do?
1. Create or update your ORCID
Do you have an existing ORCID?
- If you have an ORCID: Please Sign in to ORCID and check your information is up to date, including your institution, funding, and publications. If you have more than one ORCID iD, please follow the Troubleshooting steps to remove duplicate iDs.
- If you do not have an ORCID: Create your ORCID iD; it takes less than a minute. Visit https://orcid.org/register, and enter your details.
2. Open My Details on the Nectar Dashboard
Log into the Nectar Dashboard. In the top-right corner, click your email address, and select My Details.
3. Connect to ORCID
Click the Connect to ORCID button.
4. Sign in to ORCID
Follow the prompt to sign in to ORCID, using your email address or ORCID iD. Alternatively, you may 'Sign in through your institution' by clicking the button at the bottom of the screen.
5. Authorize access
When prompted, Authorize access.
You may also be prompted to update your ORCID account settings (for example: Share your verified email domains).
Congratulations! The My Details page on the Nectar Dashboard will indicate your ORCID is connected.
6. Regularly update your ORCID record
Please remember to regularly add and update the information on your ORCID record, including works (research outputs, publications, data sets, conference presentations) and funding information (grants, awards, or other types of funding that you have received to support your research).
Troubleshooting
If you have an issue or question that is not addressed in this article, please visit the ORCID Help Center, or contact the Nectar Helpdesk.
I don't have an ORCID iD
Follow the steps to register for an ORCID iD; it takes less than a minute. Visit https://orcid.org/register, and enter your details.
I have multiple ORCID iDs
Please remove duplicate ORCID iDs by following the steps listed in the ORCID support article: I have more than one ORCID iD.
My publications or grants aren't appearing on the Nectar Dashboard
Please check your Visibility Settings on ORCID. As a trusted party, Nectar can read information with visibility set to 'Trusted parties'. Private information you have set to 'Only me' cannot be read by Nectar, and will not appear on the Nectar Dashboard.
*What is the planned timeline of changes?
- April 2025: The feature for users to connect their ORCID has been implemented.
- End May 2025: Connecting ORCIDs will become compulsory for users requesting or renewing a Nectar allocation.
- June 2025: A feature that uses ORCID to provide research grant and publication information in the allocation form will become available.
Please note this is subject to change, and further communications will be sent to Nectar users via the Nectar Service Update.
